Trinamool wins Mamata seat in South Kolkata

In another setback to the Left in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress on Sunday won the Kolkata South Lok Sabha seat by a record margin of 2.30 lakh votes.

In another setback to the Left in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress on Sunday won the Kolkata South Lok Sabha seat by a record margin of 2.30 lakh votes. Trinamool candidate Subrata Bakshi polled 5.17 lakh votes while his nearest rival, Ritabrata Banerjee of the CPI-M, got 2.87 votes.

The constituency has long been identified with party chief and chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who won from the seat six times in a row—1991, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009.

Mamata vacated the seat after she won the assembly by-election from Bhowanipur two months ago.
