Two-year-old gagged, thrown on floor several times by speech therapist in Kolkata
The therapist was remanded in judicial custody after she allegedly assaulted the boy who was brought to her for treatment.
A speech therapist has been remanded in judicial custody by a Kolkata court for allegedly assaulting a two-year-old boy who was brought to her for treatment, police said on Thursday.
The accused, Chaitali Mukherjee, allegedly assaulted the victim at her clinic in south Kolkata on Monday. Charu Market police arrested Mukherjee after viewing CCTV footage of the incident, wherein the boy suffered head injuries as well as bruises on his hands and legs.
The court remanded Mukherjee in judicial custody on Wednesday.
“The child’s mother fainted while watching the footage,” said Anirban Guha Thakurta, the lawyer representing the aggrieved family. “Police pressed charges under non-bailable sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) but did not seek police custody of the accused.”
The lawyer also wants charges to be pressed under Section 307 of the IPC, and the offence be treated as an attempt to murder.
The child’s mother said that the victim was gagged and thrown on the floor over and over again. “He could have died,” she added.
Girl shot ‘accidentally’ in Nadia district
In another incident reported from the state, a four-year-old girl was killed in Hanskhali village of Nadia district on Tuesday while a 50-year-old neighbour was showing off his illegal firearm in an inebriated state.
The accused, Jatin Roy, fled soon after the incident. Local residents said he had come to the victim’s house to meet her grandmother.
“We have made an arrest in the case. Investigations are on,” said Nadia superintendent of police Pandey Santosh, without elaborating.
