Punjabi Ekta Party (PEP) chief Sukhpal Singh Khaira along with the party candidate from Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency Paramjit Kaur Khalra on Wednesday kicked off the election campaign for the general elections. Khaira said Paramjit Kaur is the strongest panthic face against Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)’s candidate Jagir Kaur.

PEP had announced Paramjit Kaur, the widow of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, as its candidate from Khadoor Sahib, considered as panthic stronghold. Former officer of Punjab co-operative bank, Jaswant Singh, was abducted from his house in Khalra village of Tarn Taran district and was allegedly killed by police officers in 1995, after Jaswant accused the police of disposing of unidentified bodies of Sikh youth killed in fake encounters. In 2007, four police officers were sentenced to life for the murder of Jaswant Singh.

Paramjit Kaur said, “My agenda will be promoting human rights. If I win the election, I will protect the human rights of not only the people living in my constituency but of the whole country. My husband had given his life for protecting human rights and I will follow the path shown by him.”

Launching an attack on Bibi Jagir Kaur, who was announced as the SAD candidate on Tuesday, Khaira said, “Jagir Kaur has no base in Khadoor Sahib. She will suffer a severe defeat from the constituency.”

Taking on incumbent MP Ranjit Singh Brahmpura, Khaira said, “Brahmpura violated the maryada of alliance by announcing his party (SAD-Taksali)’s candidate Bir Davinder Singh from Sri Anandpur Sahib. Even, the SAD-Taksali candidate from Khadoor Sahib General JJ Singh has no base in the area. Brahmpura should withdraw JJ Singh’s candidature immediately and should support Bibi Paramjit Kaur.”

Brahmpura had parted ways with Khaira-led Punjab Democratic Alliance (PDA) after it fielded candidates from Khadoor Sahib and Anandpur Sahib.
