"The police should have taken the matter seriously as it was a case of honour killing and the life of Mehwish and her daughters wasat risk"lucknow Updated: Jun 14, 2013 16:07 IST
Following the self-immolation bid by Mehwish and her in-laws in Adholi village of Bulandshahar on Wednesday, the activists of All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) submitted a letter to the ADG law and order, demanding security for Mehwish’s family and action againt the accused police officials who propelled the family to make such an attempt.
Mehwish is the wife of Abdul Hakim, who was shot dead in November 2012 for marrying against the wishes of the girl’s family. The couple had hit the headlines after they appeared on television show Satyamev Jayte and highlighted the threat looming over the couple soon after they eloped and got married in 2010.
Following the death of her husband, Mehwish was living with her in-laws who were supporting her and fighting for justice. Mehwish’s brother-in-law Yusuf had come to Lukcnow and submitted a letter to senior police officials here in February 2013, demanding the safety of his family that was receiving continuous threats.
Madhu Garg, state secretary AIDWA said, “The police had then given a very lukewarm response. They should have taken the matter seriously as it was a case of honour killing and the life of Mehwish and her two little daughters was at risk.”
According to reports, the family poured kerosine and set itself ablaze after a policeman mounted pressure on the family to take its complaints back against her family, allegedly involved in the murder of her husband. While all others were saved, Yusuf suffered 80% burns and is critical.
