Hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) petition highlighting pollution in the Yamuna river in Vrindavan, the Allahabad high court on Friday directed divisional commissioner, district magistrate and local body authorities of Mathura to put a ban on the use of polythene in Vrindavan, a town in Mathura district.
Passing this order, a division bench comprising acting chief justice Amitava Lala and justice Pradeep Kumar Singh Baghel also directed for the setting up of a task force in respect of the allegations of pollution, sewerage problems and other related problems of Vrindavan. The proposed panel will consist of officers of various departments. They will look into the matter and submit a report to the court.
The court passed the above directives on a PIL petition filed by the Brij Lifeline Welfare Society. The court, while observing that pollution existed more in religious places than non-religious ones in the state, asked the Uttar Pradesh State Legal Services Authority to raise an awareness campaign there.
Appearing on behalf of the state, its counsel RN Pandey pointed out that the sewage treatment plant’s work would be completed by March 2013.
Earlier, counsel for the petitioner Shambhu Chopra produced the photographs and the newspaper reports before the court to show that dirty water of the area had been directly flowing into the Yamuna thereby polluting it and posing a threat to the health of people.
