Checking man-animal conflict: UP forest department proposes eco-sensitive zones in forest areas

UP’s forest department has proposed 22 eco-sensitive zones (ESZ) to bring down man-animal conflicts in forest areas.

“This will categorically define the dos and don’ts in wildlife/bird sanctuaries, and mark the areas around each ESZ sanctuary where these have to be followed,” said SK Upadhaya, principal chief conservator of forests (PCCF).

Clarifying further Upadhyay gave examples – If a sanctuary falls under ESZ, then mining in 10-km areas from the sanctuary would be banned and no new saw mill can start in that area. Likewise, there will be rules banning activities and violation of these rules would be punishable.

ESZ will also allow certain activities without restriction and some with permission. Going inside forest area for picking up dry wood or edible forest items will have no check. “But felling of trees will only be allowed with permission,” he said.

The forest department also plans to start resorts in sanctuaries and for this locals will be given a chance. “We plan to have staff from among locals and if the footfall of visitors goes up, we can also arrange for professional training of the locals running restaurants and resorts near the forest area,” said Upadhyay.

“The purpose is to give boost to eco-tourism in the state,” he said.
