Cop suspended for assaulting woman

A police station head was placed under suspension on Sunday while a sub-inspector and four constables were sent to reserve police lines (RPL) after a video showed them involved in a brutal assault on a woman and her male companion who were taking part in a protest over a fatal accident in Gangaghat, Unnao on Saturday.

A police station head was placed under suspension on Sunday while a sub-inspector and four constables were sent to reserve police lines (RPL) after a video showed them involved in a brutal assault on a woman and her male companion who were taking part in a protest over a fatal accident in Gangaghat, Unnao on Saturday.

Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav also took cognizance of the matter, which forced the top officials to initiate stringent action against the cops, including Gangaghat station head, Pradeep Yadav.

The cops who have been attached with the RPL are police outpost in-charge, KP Singh, and constables Yogendra Yadav, Ram Naresh, Awdhesh and Sukhram.

Notably, three youths were travelling on a bike when their vehicle entered into a head-on collision with a loader, resulting into the death of 19-year-old Vijay.

Irate over the accident, relatives and friends of Vijay and his companions Dharmendra and Anil converged at the site and started pelting stones at passing vehicles in protest. They also tried to set alight the vehicle involved in the mishap. In the meantime, local police outpost incharge KP Singh and four constables reached the site and tried to disperse the mob but in vain.

Unnao’s SP Mahendra Pal Singh, admitted that the CM and a number of other prominent people had seen the footage, following which preliminary inquiry was made into the matter.
