This not the first instance of the fake workout of a case by the UP police. After the murder of chief medical officer Dr VK Arya in October 2010, the UP police claimed to have solved case by arresting the 'killers' Ajay Kumar Mishra, Sumit Dixit and Amit Dixit. Later the case was handed over to special task force and it was found that Anand Tiwari, Vinod Sharma and RK Verma were involved in the killing. The police had to release Mishra and Dixit from jail.

In 1998, the UP police claimed to have killed the mafiosi Dhananjay Singh and his associates in an encounter. Later, it was found that the police had killed four innocent persons. A case was registered against three dozen cops involved in the encounter.
