Ranjita Sharma, the sister of the accident victim who lost his life in Sunday's horrific accident, hit out at top police officials over their silence on the driver being charged with bailable offences.
She said this was deliberately done by junior officials so that Karan Suri could get bail within minutes. Initially Kanpur range deputy inspector general Sunil Gupta had directed the Swaroop Nagar station in-charge, Vivek, to alter the case into non-bailable sections, but SHO contravened his order in hours, said Ranjita. She also questioned the fact that none of the top officials had asked why Suri's arrest was shown 11 hours after he was handed over to the police and why his medical examination was delayed by 13 hours.
Swaroop Nagar senior sub-inspector Anil Mishra said things shouldn't be an issue for others, though another source in the police department said this was done to ensure alcohol traces in Suri's blood were wiped out. He said cops had pressurised Amit's grandfather to submit the FIR on charges of rash driving and not elaborating on details intending to ensure easy bail.

But, said Amit's brother-in-law Deepak Joshi, an hour later, Gupta asked the station head not to make any changes and ensure Suri's bail at earliest. SP city Bharat Singh Yadav confirmed he had been asked to impose the more severe section 304 of IPC, but soon the order was contravened.

He said he had been told Suri's family had strong contacts and couldn't be harmed. Vivek said, "Senior officials have no authority to force us to alter the case into severe charges." District police chief Amitabh Yash said juniors had been asked to stick to legal parameters.
