All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Digvijay Singh on Tuesday said he would go ahead with his programme to visit Sanjarpur in Azamgarh despite the Ulema Council’s assertions that the Congress leaders would not allowed entering Azamgarh.
Singh along with Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) president Rita Bahuguna Joshi proposes to visit Sanjarpur from where a maximum number of youths were arrested for their alleged involvement in terrorist activities.
Asserting that the Congress had always maintained a distance from fundamentalist forces Singh said those who may be innocent should also be given a chance for hearing. “I want to go and see why Azamgarh is being given a bad name. There is no curfew. I am going ahead and will go alone if section 144 of CrPC has been imposed there,” said Singh.
“I will meet all those who want to meet me there,” said Singh adding his objectives was to give a hearing to the families of those who may be innocent. “I was the first person to raise my voice after Batla House encounter case,” said Singh. Later even the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) also took up the issue, he said.
About organizational elections Singh said the process of publication of electoral rolls was in progress. Singh said the party had received complaints that the names on the membership applications didn’t match photographs. About the delay in the publication of electoral rolls he said the Pradesh Returning Officer (PRO) was being supervising the poll programme and he had nothing to do with it.
