A group divyangs (differently-abled people) will manage traffic in Varanasi from Tuesday.
Circle officer (traffic) Dy SP Rakesh Naik imparted training to them in traffic management as part of his plan to create employment opportunities for such people.
“The five divyangs will manage traffic at five intersections -- Godaulia, Maidagini, Malviya, Girijaghar and Sigra with the help of traffic cops. They will also create awareness among commuters on traffic rules,” said Naik.
He said that these five differently-abled people will, in turn, train around 100 local divyangs in traffic management. The trainees have already been identified.
Naik said Ramkumar Gupta, Jagat Singh, Alok Shukla, Umakant and Ganga Sagar underwent traffic management training from him when he was posted in Kanpur in 2013.
He said a monthly remuneration of Rs 2,000 will be paid to each divyang with the help of Varanasi based philanthropists. The five will also be provided accommodation and free food. Naik also plans to create an organisation to be managed by divyangs for their cause.
Jagat Singh, one of the special traffic ‘cops’, said, “I am well aware of traffic management and traffic rules because of the training. I will try my level best to streamline traffic at the intersection and will also impart training to other divyangs so that they may work for the cause of society.”

{{/usCountry}}The group of divyangs, who are from Kanpur, reached Varanasi two days back. Naik hopes the initiative will bring about positive change in society towards adhering to traffic rules.
Traffic jams are a daily nightmare for locals at some intersections and the traffic literally crawls on a few stretches like Nai Sadak, Godaulia-BHU Road and Godaulia-Maidagini Road.
