Eight doctors surrender, jailed in NRHM scam

Eight government doctors, of them seven women, accused in the multi-crore National Rural Health Mission scam, surrendered in the CBI court in Ghaziabad on Friday. HT reports.

Eight government doctors, of them seven women, accused in the multi-crore National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scam, surrendered in the CBI court in Ghaziabad on Friday.

The court rejected their bail plea and sent them to jail.

The medical officers sent to jail are Dr Deepa Bharti, Dr Sumedha Yadav, Dr Chitra Singh, Dr Chitra Saxena, Dr KK Saxena, Dr Indu Bala, Dr Anjali Pant and Dr Rekha Chaudhary.

The CBI had in September chargesheeted 28 government doctors, two clerks, two contractors, one computer operator and a private medical practitioner in the scam.

They have been charged with embezzlement of around Rs.90 lakh NRHM funds.

Politicians, senior officers, doctors, clerks and contractors have been found involved in
siphoning off of NRHM funds during 2005-2011.

The scam has claimed two CMOs and a deputy CMO, who were murdered, and others, who allegedly committed suicide. The agency has named politicians and bureaucrats in the scam.

The government doctors have been charged with withdrawing fund for hiring ambulances under NRHM on fake bills, withdrawing funds for payment to the manpower hired for NRHM programme on fake vouchers.
