Every government hospital must go for accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH), said Professor SK Sarin, director, Institute of Liver and Hepatobiliary Sciences (ILHS), Delhi.

“Good private hospitals are recognised by the NABH, but government hospitals don’t take accreditation by NABH seriously, which affects their working,” said Prof Sarin addressing doctors on the 34th Foundation Day of Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) on Thursday.

“There are 68,000 MBBS and only 35,000 post graduate seats, so over 30,000 doctors are devoid of specialty. Upgrading knowledge of such doctors is essential,” he added.

Sarin said only those doctors who want to serve humanity should be enrolled for post-graduate courses. A test of such doctors must be taken to know whether they are interested in service to mankind or not, he said.

The ILHS director urged doctors to never compromise on the quality of treatment.

NATIONAL MEDICAL COMMISSION SOON

Professor Sarin said the Centre is soon going to constitute National Medical Commission and the draft for it is ready. “The only catch with the commission is that doctors will not have any say in it as would be a total government show. Doctors want that they should run the commission instead of bureaucrats,” he said.
