The economic offences wing (EOW) is probing the irregularities in the purchase of wheat (food and civil supplies department), seeds (UP Seeds Corporation) and medicines (health and family welfare department). Recently, the EOW was directed to assist the lokayukta in the probe into the purchase of pink stones by the mines department and the Rashtriya Nirman Nigam (RNN) for the construction of memorials.

An EOW officer said, “since its inception in 1970, the state government has handed over around 400 investigations to the EOW. The EOW has filed chargesheets in around 200 cases. In some others, the investigation was delayed due to a shortage of officers in the department,” he said and added around a dozen posts of inspectors, nine DSPs and five SPs were lying vacant.

“The state government has been apprised of the requirement of human resource to solve the problem,” he said and added “a proposal has been dispatched to the home department for the appointment of officers”.

Principal secretary, home, RM Srivastava said, “the vacant posts in the EOW and other agencies are being filled with the promotion of police officers to various ranks. Recently, the DPC has been held for the promotion of provincial police service officers. We are awaiting the centre’s green signal for the promotion of senior PPS officers to IPS. Once the promotion procedure is completed, there will be no dearth of the officers in various agencies.”
