With the maximum temperature dropping to as much as eight to 10 degrees below normal, Lucknow and Kanpur remained colder than Shimla and Jammu on Saturday.
The state capital recorded season’s coldest temperature with mercury plummeting to 4.4 degrees in the night. Even the day temperature fell appreciably due to dense fog.
The maximum temperature in the capital city was 14.9 degrees, 8 notches below normal. Day and night temperature in Shimla was recorded at 15.8 (maximum) and 6.9 (minimum) degrees while in Jammu, the maximum and minimum temperature was 20.8 and 6.2 degrees respectively.
Kanpur recorded a maximum temperature of 14.2 degrees, 10 degrees below normal while minimum temperature was 3.2 degrees, six notches below normal.
Najibabad remained coldest at 3.4 degrees. The minimum temperature in all major stations was 1-6 degrees below normal while the day temperature too recorded a sharp dip. Dense fog threw normal traffic out of gear in the entire state. Several trains and four flights were cancelled while scores of trains were running behind schedule. This caused huge inconvenience to passengers who had to wait for hours at end to catch their respective trains.
Traffic in the city too moved at snail’s pace due to reduced visibility. Traffic department has asked the people to switch on fog light and drive slowly to avoid accidents. The forecast for Sunday was not encouraging either. Weatherman says there would no respite from fog, which would continue for the next few days. With the day and night temperature falling each day, doctors have advised people to wear heavy woollens to avoid cold. Morning walkers too were advised to take precautions.
