In a bizarre incident, a man set his son’s girl friend afire on Thursday when she insisted on marrying his son claiming years of relationship with him.
The 19-year-old girl, resident of Tarakhol village in Deoria, is struggling for life at BRD Medical College hospital in Gorakhpur. Doctors on Friday said her condition was critical.
A resident Suraj Kushwaha said the girl and Jai Hind Singh’s son Ranjit had a steady love affair for years.
The girl’s family approached Singh with the proposal of marriage with his son but he reportedly turned it down on the plea that the girl’s side came from a different caste and a weaker section.
However, the girl’s side called panchayat on Thursday to settle the matter between the two families.
During the panchayat meeting, the girl’s mother revealed the relationship between Ranjit and her daughter and demanded the members to direct Singh to agree to the marriage.
This enraged him and in a fit of anger he started beating up the women present during the meeting. This scared the girl, who rushed inside the house to save herself.
But, Singh chased her, caught hold of her with the help of one Ram Hasaula, poured kerosene over her the girl and set her afire.

{{/usCountry}}Panicky, the girl climbed up the roof of the house and jumped down. The villagers rushed her to district hospital, where the doctors referred her to BRD Medical College hospital Gorakhpur.
Deoria SP Umesh Kumar Singh said police had registered a case against Jai Hind Singh and his associates. Ram Hausala has been arrested but Singh is absconding, he said.
