“UPA government extends the maximum possible help to Uttar Pradesh vis-à-vis any other state. But the benefits are not reaching the people. The funds sent from Centre are siphoned off,” said Rahul before winding up his two-day tour to his Amethi Lok Sabha constituency on Saturday.

Rahul’s observations came a day after a meeting of the vigilance and monitoring committee in which gross irregularities — allocation of Rs 1.7 crore to a blacklisted NGO in the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act — were brought to his notice. The Bahujan Samaj Party members had opposed an inquiry by central agencies.

Addressing meetings of party workers, Rahul said that the representatives of the political parties had agreed that all was not well in the implementation of NREGA.

“NREGA comprises about 40 per cent of central funds sent to the districts. So fight the corruption in the implementation of the scheme,” said the Congress general secretary.
