Stating it was against the division of the state, the SP asked Joshi to declare Monday’s House proceedings null and void. The BJP delegation to Joshi requested him not to give his “assent” to the proposal and instruct the government to reconvene the House for “discussing the divide-UP” move.

While the BJP has urged the Centre not to consider the proposal as the “BSP government had got it cleared flouting all constitutional norms and without letting the House discuss the issue”, the Congress said it favoured setting up a States Reorganisation Commission.

SP leader Azam Khan said: “How can such a big issue like the division of the state be done without any discussion or debate? We would have made at least 100 MLAs cross the floor had there been division of the House on the issue.”

He said: “This is the first time in my political career that a opposition-sponsored no-confidence motion, moved by the BJP and SP, wasn’t even considered in the House. Chief minister Mayawati said her government had a majority. Then why did the government shy away from discussing the no-confidence motion?”

Congress legislature party leader Pramod Tiwari said a states reorganisation commission should be set up to decide how the state should be divided.
