Rotting bodies pollute Ganga, diarrhoea raging

A number of corpses spotted in Aligarh and Muzaffarnagar

The Ganga water has become polluted due to putrefying corpses and people are suffering from diarrhoea in western Uttar Pradesh, including Aligarh. Three bodies were found in Narora barrage, seven bodies were found in Ganga in Ramghat and one in Aligarh.

In Lucknow, additional director general (law and order) Arun Kumar said so far eleven bodies had been recovered in rivers in Bulandshahr, Bijnor and Pilibhit. Kumar said three bodies were found in river near Ram Ghat in Bulandshahr on Monday. He said the district police officers had been asked to preserve DNA of these bodies after post mortem.

Meanwhile, doctors of JN Medical College who are engaged in relief work at Haridwar said that the water had become contaminated due to dead bodies and consequently people were suffering from diarrhoea.

The bodies are continuously coming down in Ganga. Three bodies were found in Narora barrage on Sunday and seven bodies were found in Ganga on Monday morning in Ramghat area. Despite administrative orders to retrieve any body spotted, the police did not reach the site. Ram Singh, a villager of Ramghat told Hindustan Times that in the bushes near the field of one Jhandu Singh nearly six bodies were seen which included two children, three women and two men. Police were informed but they did not take any notice on the plea of jurisdiction. Besides, more than a dozen bodies were spotted at Muzaffarnagar but the police made no attempt to recover them, arguing about jurisdiction.
