Unidentified gunmen shot up the vehicle of Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Urgasen Mishra, killing his nephew Durgesh and seriously injuring another relative in Chitrakoot district of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, police said.
Mishra, who allegedly has links with the mining mafia , escaped unhurt in the attack. He told police that the attack was sudden and his bodyguards could not respond.
Superintendent of police, Chitrakoot, Manoj Jha, said several teams are working to nab the killers who sped off in a black Mahindra XUV towards Allahabad.
The attack on Mishra was allegedly executed to avenge the killing of former block pramukh Dwarka Prasad alias Pappu Dwivedi recently, people familiar with the matter said.
Mishra was in Mau tehsil to meet block pramukh Pankaj Yadav and circle officer (Mau) Rajneesh Yadav. He left the CO’s office in a Scorpio. As the vehicle reached the highway, the assailants fired more than 20 shots.
