With at least 280 highresolution automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras keeping a hawk-like vigil on city’s arterial crossings it would become difficult for speedsters and other traffic violators to escape the police eye in the New Year.
The high-speed cameras with pan, zoom, tilt and other hi-tech features would be installed as a part of the city police’s advanced traffic management pilot project, to be launched in the state capital on January 26, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Yashasvi Yadav informed HT.
“To streamline vehicular flow and identify traffic violators the advance traffic management pilot project would be launched in Lucknow. A modern traffic control room would also be set up under the ambitious project, which would be linked with the high-resolution automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras,” the SSP said, adding that project would be made fully functional after a trial period of one month.

{{/usCountry}}“We are trying to set up the modern traffic control room in a month’s time and its trial period would start from the Republic Day,” Yadav said.
He added that a total of 150 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras have already been installed in Naka, Qaiserbagh, Wazirganj and Chowk areas, while around 28 CCTV cameras have been installed from the stretch from Hazratganj crossing to district magistrate’s residence. “These 178 CCTV cameras would be directly linked to the modern traffic control room after it is set up,” the SSP said, adding that the control room would be set up in the same building where the modern police control room was functioning.
“The number of cameras would be gradually increased and the aim is to link at least 5,000 cameras with the modern traffic control room. The city police are coordinating with different traders association and organisations to install cameras at markets and other crowded places. These cameras would also be linked to the control room and its feed would be available with us,” the SSP further said.
The cameras would be installed at important crossings, markets, crowded places, railway and bus stations would also help the police to clamp down on criminals.
