In a major breakthrough, the Special Task Force (STF), Varanasi unit, arrested Gaurav Yadav, the prime accused in the sensational loot of Rs.3 crore from a commission agent in Kolkata, from Mansarovar ghat here on Sunday.

The STF also recovered R42 lakh cash, gold worth R15 lakh and a huge cache of arms and ammunition from Gaurav, a resident of Mansarovar ghat. Acting on a tip-off, at around 13.15pm, an STF team led by inspector Shailesh Pratap Singh arrested Gaurav. Reports said on August 23, three armed miscreants, including Gaurav, entered the office premises of Manoj Luthra, a commission agent of Kolkata, at Mango Lane, posing themselves as bank officials.

Later, they looted R3,30,00,000 from the safety locker at gunpoint. During the probe, Kolkata police came to know that the miscreants were hiding in UP. Following a request from the Kolkata police, Amit Pathak, SSP STF, directed in-charge of the Varanasi field unit of the STF DSP Durgesh Kumar to arrest the miscreants.

On Sunday morning, Kumar got a tip-off about the presence of Gaurav at the Mansarovar ghat. At around 13.15pm, the STF arrested Gaurav and handed him over to Tapan Chakravorty of Kolkata police.

One 9 mm pistol, 11 live cartridges, one .32 bore revolver, one .315 bore countrymade gun and its five live bullets were also recovered from Gaurav.
