How about gifting a home to the little chirpy beauties that frequent your garden in spring and summer? Today, on World Sparrow Day, get a nest box or bird house for sparrows to add beauty and colours to your home.

This simple step will help you contribute in helping sparrows live and multiply. Placing a bird bath and grains in your balcony or garden will help too.

However, it is important to choose the right place and maintain cleanliness.

Experts from the Lucknow zoo said, “Care must be taken while choosing a place for keeping the vessels containing the birds’ water and food. A place or corner with least disturbances should be selected -- like the balcony, the terrace, or a quiet corridor or verandah. The vessel and water should be clean to keep the birds safe from infections.”

An official of biodiversity department said, “Sparrows were once an integral part of every home. Then their numbers started to diminish due to lack of shelter and shrinking green cover. However, now that people are more conscious about the environment and are ensuring provisions for birds in their homes, the sparrow numbers are again going up.”

The biodiversity and wildlife conservation lab of LU also rolled out the initiative ‘Gharaunda 700’ in October 2015. “The initiative was aimed at ensuring the installation of 700 sparrow nest boxes in the city,” added Kanaujia.

Volunteers are also distributing forms to people to help get the sparrow count in different parts of the city.

On Monday, several events have been lined up to celebrate the day. The events will be organised at the regional science city, Aliganj, and will include competitions like quiz, rangoli-making, painting and photography.
