Uttar Pradesh's biggest dairy plant will see the light of the day in Lucknow before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The state-of-the-art unit would have a processing capacity of 5 lakh litres of milk per day.
Laying the foundation stone of the milk-processing unit on the Sultanpur road, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday said, "The plant will become operational before the election, as we want to send a positive message." The state government had earlier said the project would be completed in 2015.
The advanced plant will produce quality milk products under the Parag brand name. The existing Parag dairy plant (capacity of 1.5 lakh litres per day) located in the heart of the city is nearly one-fourth of the capacity of the proposed dairy. This plant would be dismantled after the new one comes up, said sources. Milk supply to the new plant would be sought from 2,31,003 milk committees under the 4,862 milk cooperatives in 16 adjoining districts.
The districts include Ambedkar Nagar, Barabanki, Bahraich, Balrampur, Basti, Sultanpur, Rae Bareli, Shahjahanpur, Sitapur, Shravasti, Jalaun, Hardoi, Gonda, Unnao, Lakhimpur and Fatehpur. Earlier, chief secretary Jawed Usmani said the dairy plant would not only provide more and better milk and milk products to the consumers, it would also give direct economic benefits to farmers and milk producers.
