"This Gandhi of new age is promoting communalism by giving inflammatory and violent speeches against a particular community and is advising people to follow the path of violence. A person with such a behaviour should not be called a Gandhi. He has no moral right to affix Gandhi in his name," Mayawati said during an election rally in Pilibhit.

The BSP supremo also attacked Varun's mother and BJP leader Maneka Gandhi and accused her of ignoring the people of Pilibhit, from where she was elected MP in the last elections.

"Maneka Gandhi, who had been an MP from this constituency for long and had also served as Union Minister, ignored Pilibhit and failed to protect honour and integrity of the people," she alleged.
