An 18-year-old American student sparked a major controversy in the US last week, when she wore a traditional Chinese dress - called a qipao - to her prom and tweeted the pictures.

Keziah Daum, student at Woods Cross High School, shared pictures of her in a red gown that she found in a vintage store in downtown Salt Lake City, she told BuzzFeed.

Soon after, Daum’s tweet was shared by Twitter user Jeremy Lam who accused her of cultural appropriation, “My culture is NOT your...prom dress.” His tweet was retweeted over 41,000 times.

Following days of heated debate on whether Daum wearing the dress was offensive to the Chinese people or not, the tweet has become a viral meme on social media, with people coming up with hilarious versions of their own.
