Their first collaboration, Disturbia, was a redux of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window. Popular leading man du jour, LaBeouf re-teams with director Caruso for a cautionary tale about cyber-technology run amok.
Evidently, Eagle Eye aims to mesh Stanley Kubrick’s 2001:A Space Odyssey with Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report and several of Hitchcock’s classics. Alas, it lacks the artistic vision of those formidable directors, besides being far too confusing.
Cut then to an alienated young man (LaBeouf) and a harried single mother (Monaghan). They are pushed by an omnipotent cell-phone caller into a conspiracy to assassinate the President of the U.S!
Set in Chicago and Washington D.C., the screenplay is merely a pretext for assorted stunts, car crashes and pyromaniacal explosions. Enough said and endured.
