2 drivers kill man over missing phone in Mumbai

Mumbai city news: The duo suspected Amarkumar Gupta, 24, to have stolen their phone and thrashed him. He later collapsed and died.

The Sakinaka police arrested two drivers for allegedly killing another in Andheri (East) on Tuesday morning.

Danish Shaikh, 22, and his friend Firoz Shaikh, 37, suspected that Amarkumar Gupta, 24, had stolen their phone and beat him to death.

According to a police source, around 5am on Tuesday, Danish could not find his phone and accused Gupta of stealing it. This led to an altercation and Danish and Firoz punched and kicked Amarkumar. After being assaulted, Amarkumar said that he had thrown Danish’s phone near Mithi River.

Around 9am, they took an auto to the site to recover the phone. However, Amarkumar collapsed on the spot and the others fled.

A passerby called the police when he saw Amarkumar lying on the ground. He was taken to Rajawadi Hospital but was declared dead on admission.

The police arrested the accused and presented them before a magistrate court. They have been remanded in custody till May 29.
