The Delhi special cell, on Tuesday, arrested Abu Aslam Azmi, nephew of Samajwadi party leader Abu Asim Azmi in an international drug peddling racket after seizing 5kg of party drug ‘MDMA’ also known as ‘ICE’ worth Rs 40 crores in Delhi. Azmi was arrested from a five star hotel in Mumbai.

Maharashtra SP leader Abu Azmi said he had nothing to do with his nephew. “My name is unnecessarily being dragged, by a section of the media, into the arrest of Aslam, who happens to be my nephew. Let me explain to the general public that I have seven brothers. All their children are independent and doing their own activities” said Azmi.

The special cell also arrested three others including a Chandigarh based tycoon identified as Amit Aggarwal. The police claimed Azmi used to work as a right hand man, handling Indian operations, for one Kailash Rajput who supplied drugs while operating from Dubai.

“Owing to common friends, he became friends with Kailash Rajput. Azmi opened a restaurant in Goa and came in contact with drug traffickers there, who got the drugs from Rajput. Azmi and Rajput joined hands and Azmi made his base in Mumbai. Around three years ago, when Kailash Rajput was arrested by Mumbai police, Azmi helped him during his trial period and hence became a close aide. On the directions of Rajput, Azmi supplied the drugs through courier to France, Germany, U.K. Spain and USA,” said Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, deputy commissioner of police, Special Cell, New Delhi.

Azmi, a class 12 dropout, stayed in Goa during 2010 and 2013.

According to officials, the racket was busted after they received a tip-off that "Aggarwal was procuring premium quality of ephedrine from Zirakpur in Punjab along with his associate.”

Police said Aggarwal and his associates used to supply ‘MDMA’ popularly known as ‘ICE’ to his clients in India and abroad. After receiving the information, the Delhi special cell started investigations in Delhi, Mumbai and Chandigarh. On the lines of investigation. on June 4, the special cell received information that “a consignment of premium quality drug - ICE was consigned from Mumbai to be supplied in the USA and the UK. Drug-traffickers would assemble at a courier company - 'Prefer Logistic Pvt Ltd’ run by Aggarwal, in Mahipalpur to package the consignment,” according to officials.

After a trap was laid, the suspect later identified as Avdhesh Kumar was nabbed from outside the office and police seized 5 kg of drugs from him.

Police claimed, during interrogation, Kumar confessed he was offered Rs 1 Lakh for supplying 1 kg of drug and the booty would be shared amongst them proportionately. Kumar revealed he worked for the Aggarwal and one Chandan Rai after which the duo were also arrested. The accused then disclosed that the drugs were supplied by Azmi after which a team was dispatched to Mumbai and he was arrested.

Officials said the drug was supplied to UK, USA apart from the UAE and some other middle-eastern countries.
