BMC seeks MMRDA help to build JVPD flyover

Instead of putting the project on the back-burner, the civic body intends to seek the MMRDA help for a hassle-free execution of its project

Though the five flyovers planned on the link road between Andheri and Borivli have been scrapped, and the extension of Jogeshwari road over bridge has been affected by Dahisar-DN Nagar-Bandra-Mankhurd Metro corridor, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is determined to construct the Juhu-Vile Parle Development (JVPD) scheme flyover.

Instead of putting the project on the back-burner, the civic body intends to seek the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority’s (MMRDA) help for a hassle-free execution of its project. The Rs180-crore project that was initially mooted by the MMRDA and later handed over to the BMC, about three years ago, is still in the planning stages. The flyover, which was supposed to resolve commuting woes of those travelling towards Versova from the Western Express Highway (WEH), hit a road block after it overlapped with the Metro corridor at the JVPD Junction.

The BMC has redesigned the structure to ensure that it doesn’t affect the Metro corridor. This new design — forwarded to the MMRDA — will have common foundation pillars on the JVPD Junction, where the alignments of the two structures overlap. Sources from the BMC also claimed that the civic body is ready to bear the expenses for laying the pillars.

When asked whether residential structures in the vicinity will suffer if the MMRDA refuses to cooperate, the officer said the BMC is ensuring that the new designs don’t affect any of the residential buildings and hence the plan for laying a common foundation pillars should be accepted.
