Worried over implications of the provisions in city’s Development Plan, citizens submitted suggestions and objections in large numbers but the civic body is yet to form a committee to look into them.
Nearly two weeks after the deadline for suggestions/objections for the Development Plan (DP) 2034 ended, the state government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) are yet to appoint a planning committee. The seven-member committee, which will hear objections filed by citizens, is likely to be constituted only by the end of this month.
The DP-2034 was to be released in 2014 as a 20-year plan for the city. After multiple delays, the revised draft was released in May 2016, with a two-month window for citizens to submit their suggestions and objections.
Now, with the formation of the planning committee delayed, the plan is likely to be released only by 2017, closer to the civic elections, which are scheduled to be held on February 2017.
Pravin Chheda, Congress corporator and leader of Opposition in the BMC, said that the plan is deliberately being delayed because of upcoming elections. “I have already written to the standing committee chairman, the mayor and the municipal commissioner on the delay of setting-up the committee. This seems to be deliberate delay to release the plan during the elections,” Chheda said.

{{/usCountry}}The committee will include three members from the standing committee of the BMC and four urban experts appointed by the state government. The planning committee will have two months to prepare a report after hearing all objections.
This report will be submitted to the BMC’s general body , consisting of 227 corporators, who will get another two months to approve the report.
Post this, the plan will be submitted to the state government for the final approval. Trushna Vishwasrao, senior Sena leader and a likely candidate in the committee, said that the members will be appointed in the next general body meeting. “The names will be declared soon. There is no attempt to delay the process,” Vishwasrao said.
