BMC to intiate action against 14K FSI violations

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now decided to act strictly against more than 14,000 violations of floor space index (FSI) by commercial establishments and residential buildings.

It has also announced it will demolish slums having a height above 14 feet – permitted by the state government – after monsoon.

The civic chief, Ajoy Mehta, in his review meeting held on Saturday, directed the encroachment department to crack down on the violation of FSI, as the civic body has been flooded with such complaints from the citizens. According to civic sources, there are over 14,000 complaints of FSI violations.

To make the action against maximum violators, the encroachment department’s deputy municipal commissioner has been asked to issue targets at the ward level and take commercial establishments on priority. After these, the residential units will be checked. The civic chief has also been instructed to carry out thorough inspections on internal changes and alterations made by the owners/occupiers.

One of the civic officials requesting anonymity, said, “It has become very important to verify such complaints and if at all the violations are found, we will ask them to demolish it. However if not carried out by the owners, the BMC will have to demolish and ask them to restore it as per approved plans.”
