Colleges refuse to cancel admission: FYJC aspirants

The education department said that they will put up a circular on the website directing colleges to allow students to cancel admissions if they have been allocated a seat elsewhere.

The ongoing drama about online admissions for first year junior colleges (FYJC) heightened on Friday when many colleges refused to cancel provisional admissions and provide leaving certificates to students who were allotted seats elsewhere, in the first phase of the special round. Application process for the second phase will begin on August 16 and the merit list will be declared on August 23.

Close to 60,000 students secured seats in this round on Thursday; the state’s education department had invited applications for unfilled seats and allowed already admitted students to apply if they are unhappy with the seat allocation.

While most applicants did not secure colleges of their choice even in this round, others are running into objections from colleges while cancelling admissions. “My daughter finally secured a seat in her preferred college after a two and a half months but the earlier college is unwilling to let her go,” said a parent from Crawford market.

The parent added that they were asked to sign an undertaking at the time of admission that they will continue to study in the college. “Citing this, they are not even giving us a refund if we cancel now,” added the parent.

“We will continue hold more rounds as long as there are vacant seats, even if only a handful are left, so students need not worry,” Chavan added.

Parents, however, are not too hopeful about the coming rounds either. “Unless the problem in the system is fixed, children will continue to be allotted least preferred seats even if further rounds are conducted,” said Afzhal Merchant, a parent.
