According to the police, Omkar More, 21, suddenly took a U-turn and started riding on the wrong side of the road. Mahadeo Wavale, senior inspector, Vakola police station, said, “The biker took a U-turn spotting a police check-point on the western express highway.” His bike then crashed into Shigvan’s scooter throwing him off the vehicle, said police. An auto-rickshaw driver took Shigvan to VN Desai hospital. “They refused to admit him. He was taken to KEM hospital, but the hospital did not have adequate facilities. The policemen then shifted him to Global Hospital,” said Sanket, Shigvan’s brother.

Shigvan was on ventilator until Wednesday. He is currently recuperating in the ICU. Shigvan’s kin said they have footed part of the bill with the mediclaim insurance, but they are worried how to make further payments. “The hospital is not giving us a cost estimate. On Tuesday, the bill was Rs9 lakh. I discussed it with my friends and even approached a temple trust for financial help. But they asked us why we admitted him to a private hospital if we couldn’t afford it,” Sanket said.
