In Mumbai: Car crashes into trailer on Uran-Panvel Road, two dead

Two people, including a three-and-a-half -year-old boy, died and five others were injured after the car they were travelling in was hit by a trailer on Uran-Panvel road on Tuesday.

Two people, including a three-and-a-half -year-old boy, died and five others were injured after the car they were travelling in was hit by a trailer on Uran-Panvel road on Tuesday.

According to the police, the victims were from the same family in Sinchpada area of Panvel. They had gone to Uran to attend a family function in a hired car on Tuesday morning. The met with the accident when they were returning home in the afternoon. The 25-year-old car driver is one of deceased.

“As their car was crossing Kundewahar village near Panvel around 4.30pm, a trailer hit them. The trailer was on the other side of the road and it was taking a U-turn to reach the other side. However, the trailer driver lost his control of the vehicle and ended up hitting the car,” said SN Gorow, assistant police inspector at Panvel city police station.

The boy, Devansh Shashikant Bhoir, suffered severe injuries in the accident and died on spot. “The others were also injured and were rushed to three different hospitals in Panvel city by some fellow motorists. However, the driver Sachin Mundekar, succumbed to injuries after a few hours,” he said.

The truck driver fled the spot leaving behind the vehicle, after the accident. The police have seized the trailer.

“The driver was alone in the trailer when the accident took place. We are now searching for him and hope to arrest him soon,” Gorow said.

“It does not seem to be a case of drunk-driving. The trailer driver somehow lost control while taking the U-turn and crashed into the car. He might have fled the spot anticipating assault by local villagers,” he added.

The police have registered a case under sections 304A, 279, 337, 338 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 184 and 134 of the Motor Vehicle Act against the driver.

“We have sent the bodies to Panvel rural hospital for post-mortem and then delivered them to their respective families. The post-mortem reports are yet to come,” another police officer said.
