Mid-monsoon report: Maharashtra records surplus rain till July 31

As against normal rain of 543.88mm for the two-month period till July 31, the state got 550.3mm, which is 1% surplus.

With the monsoon reaching its midway mark, Maharashtra has received surplus rains so far.

As against normal rain of 543.88mm for the two-month period till July 31, the state got 550.3mm, which is 1% surplus, according to data from the weather bureau.

While the Vidarbha and Marathwada regions recorded deficient rain at 17% and 20% below normal, the Konkan coast (including Mumbai), Goa, and central Maharashtra recorded surplus rain between June and July at 7%, and 22% above normal rain.

Locations such as Gondia, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Amravati, Akola, Yavatmal, Nanded, Parbhani, Jalna, Aurangabad, Hingoli and Sangli - recorded deficient rain in the state, ranging from minus 20 to 39%. However, Nashik and Pune, both recorded the maximum surplus rain in the state, followed by Thane, Palghar, Ahmednagar and Solapur, all recording excess rain. Remaining locations in the state too, received above normal rains.

The country has recorded 2% surplus rain with 460.2mm till July 31, as against a normal of 452.8mm for both months. In Mumbai, the Santacruz weather station, representative of the suburbs and weather for Mumbai, recorded 1393mm rain from June 1 to July 31, which was 34mm above normal. However, the Colaba weather station, representative of south Mumbai, is still to complete a large margin as it recorded 1083mm rain during the same time, which was 208mm below normal.

The southwest monsoon hit the Maharashtra coast on June 8 and the Mumbai coast by June 12 this year.

Officials from the weather department said that the monsoon had been good so far. “Heavy rain during the last two weeks of June and the first week of July, gave the state a good boost to cover its seasonal average, till the midday of the monsoons” said KS Hosalikar, deputy director general, western region, India Meteorological Department (IMD). “As of now, the state can expect light intermittent showers as no significant weather system is observed over the area.”
