Mumbai suburbs face partial power cuts after Kalwa transformer trips

Power utility firms said that there could be load-shedding for a few days as repairs have not been completed

Some Mumbai suburbs, including Andheri, Ghatkopar and Borivli, experienced power cuts on Saturday afternoon after two transformers at MSETCL (Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Co. Ltd) in Kalwa tripped on Friday. Power utility firms, Tata Power and Reliance Energy in the suburbs carried out rotational load-shedding for two hours to deal with the shortfall.

Power utility firms said that there could be load-shedding for a few days as restoration work on the Kalwa transformer is still not completed. On Saturday, parts of the western suburbs, including Dahisar, Borivali, Kandivali, Andheri; and from the eastern suburbs Ghatkopar, Chembur, Tilak Nagar, Vikhroli, Powai-Kanjurmarg were affected.

“To minimise inconvenience, we have ensured that our Dahanu Power Plant is running at its full capacity of 500 MW. We may have to continue doing rotational load-shedding in a few areas till normalcy is restored in the grid,” a Reliance Energy spokesperson said,

There were no power cuts in the island city. Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd (MSEDCL), which supplies power in Bhandup-Mulund, Thane and Navi Mumbai also did not carry out any power cuts in those areas. “We had adequate power and there was no need for any power cuts (in the island city),” said Hanumant Gophane, chief public relations officer of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST).
