Mumbai University results mess: Maharashtra gets new system to handle all processes

The Mumbai University adopted an online system -- on-screen marking system (OMS) – for the first time this year.

An integrated university management system (IUMS) to handle administration, admissions, exams, online assessment, affilitations and digital results in the Mumbai university (MU) – this is the Maharashtra government’s solution to avoid paper correction goof-ups like this year.

Lack of preparation and infrastructure led to a delay in assessment and consequently the announcement of results.

The university is yet to declare the results of more than 9,000 students.

According to sources, the state directorate of information technology (DIT) is in the process of finalising the system, which will handle the functioning and provide end-to-end solutions to 14 public universities in the state.

It will also help the state to monitor the functioning of the universities with the help of a back-end system.

The system will have softwares and programs for smooth administration.

“MetriTrac firm carried out online assessment of answer papers this year. Once the system is launched, the university won’t need a private agency for the task,” said a source.

This will help students take prints or access their results even at a later stage, sources said.

The aim is to eliminate discrepancies and mismanagement in functioning of universities.

Vinod Tawde, higher and technical education minister, approved the system after a seeing a presentation on it a few days ago.

“We need to train the university staff, so we decided to implement it from the next academic year,” said a senior officer, on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
