Around 10pm last Friday, Savita’s brother-in-law Ajit Shivgan called her father saying she was not opening the doorbell.

The police broke open the door and found Savita hanging from the ceiling fan.

The police found a suicide note in a book, apparently written by Savita, which blamed her in-laws for the drastic step.

Acting on the allegations levelled in the note, the police arrested Savita’s husband, Tushar Raul, 37, and his brother-in-law, Prashant Parab, 41.

They have been booked under sections 306 (abetment to suicide), 498A (spouse or relative of the spouse subjecting the woman to cruelty), 504 (intentional insult), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 34(acts done by several people with common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

Trupti Katkar, Raul’s sister and an accused, is still absconding and is wanted by the police.
