Polytechnic diploma-holders in Maharashtra will now be able to avail speedy online verification of their diploma certificates. The state government has decided to store diploma certificates awarded to those completing courses from the state’s polytechnics in the National Academic Depository (NAD), a database to store academic awards in digital format created by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD). The state will store around 9 lakh diplomas awarded since 2000.

Last year, the University of Mumbai (MU) had announced that it will provide digital lockers to its students and alumni from the current academic year, allowing them to acquire various documents online and avail their swift verification. The university had created the first digital locker for businessman Mukesh Ambani - who is an alumni - at its 160th annual convocation in January 16 last year. However, the project never took off.
On Friday, the state higher and technical education department signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with CDSL Ventures Limited, a subsidiary of Central Depository Services (India) Limited (CDSL), a public sector depository of securities to facilitate digital storage of certificates.
Students will be able to access their diploma certificates online and print their copies at will. The employers will be able to access the authenticity of the certificates furnished by job seekers by accessing the depository.
“Currently, the employers have to send the physical documents to Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE) for verification. With the digitisation of certificates, all the paperwork will be eliminated. It will save time and bring more efficiency to the process,” said Vinod Mohitkar, director, MSBTE, which regulates the polytechnics.
