Singer-actor Karan Oberoi sent to judicial custody for 14 days

Oberoi was arrested after a fashion designer, in her complaint to the Oshiwara police, alleged the ‘Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi’ fame actor raped her.

Actor-singer Karan Oberoi, arrested on charges of rape and extortion on Sunday, was on Thursday remanded in 14-day judicial custody. The Oshiwara police had sought additional custody of the 40-year-old accused for further investigation, but the Andheri metropolitan court did not find merit in the arguments.

Oberoi was arrested after a fashion designer, in her complaint to the Oshiwara police, alleged the ‘Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi’ fame actor raped her on the pretext of marriage. She claimed she was in a relationship with Oberoi since 2016. The police said the woman has alleged that Oberoi allegedly shot her objectionable videos, and threatened to make them public, if she didn’t pay him. The police wanted his custody to recover the gifts the woman allegedly gave the actor.

Dinesh Tiwari, the actor’s lawyer, cited discrepancies in the complainant’s statement and the investigation carried out by the police.

Tiwari said he will move the sessions court for bail on Friday. Oberoi’s sister Gurbani and a few actors, including Pooja Bedi and Sudhanshu Pandey, were present in the court for the hearing. Bedi and Pandey recently spoke out in his favour.
