Six detained, one held for stealing mobile phones at knifepoint in Mumbai

A group of seven, including six minors, who used to rob people of their mobile phones, often at knifepoint, was finally caught in Goregaon. The Dindoshi police have also arrested a mobile phone seller for buying the stolen phones from them.

The investigation into the crime started after a patrolling team found an Ola driver shouting for help near Oberoi mall in Goregaon (East) on Saturday. The driver told the police that a group of five to six boys apprehended him and snatched his phone at knifepoint. The police team chased and nabbed four of the six boys.

“Upon frisking them, the police found the driver’s phone. They were brought in for questioning and the racket busted,” said Vinaykumar Rathod, deputy commissioner of police, zone XII.

The accused confessed that they used to target taxi and autorickshaw drivers and daily wage workers at night and would rob them of their mobile phones at knifepoint. They would also break into chawls and shops.

Nine mobile theft cases have been registered in Dindoshi police station. Mansuri has been remanded in police custody till August 10. The minors were sent to children’s remand home.
