Six months after losing family in accident on eastern freeway, taxi driver hangs himself in Mumbai

Mumbai city news: Police said that while no suicide note was recovered, it was found that Mangru may have been depressed.

A taxi driver allegedly hanged himself at his house in Wadala on Friday, six months after an accident on the Eastern Freeway killed six of his family members.

Six people, including a six-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl, were killed and three others injured after the taxi they were travelling in crashed on the freeway. Mangru Verma, 36, had lost control of the Santro and it collided with the exit ramp at Wadi Bunder. The family were going to Mumbradevi temple.

Verma’s body was found hanging in his room by a neighbour.

“He was knocking on Verma’s door for a long time but there was no response. So he peeped through the window and saw Mangru hanging,” said Parshuram Karyakarte, senior police inspector, Wadala police station.

Police said that while no suicide note was recovered, it was found that Mangru may have been depressed. After the accident, a case had been registered against Mangru for culpable homicide.

Mangru had left his Wadala home with his wife, two children and sister-in-law’s family. He admitted to have overloaded the car, which is supposed to carry five people.

He lost his wife Anara, daughter Asha, and son Rajkumar 6, while his sister-in-law Rajshri Verma, her husband Harkesh, and their daughter Ragini, also died . Rajshri’s sons Vinay and Ravi 16 survived.
