Ragpicker runover by car while crossing Mumbai-Pune E-way

Mumbai city news: The woman came under the wheels of a car while she was crossing the road. Her companions could not recollect the registration number of the vehicle.

A 40 –year-old ragpicker was run over by an unknown vehicle on Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Wednesday.

The accident took place around 11.30 am, about seven kilometres away from Panvel city.

The police said that the woman had come from Lonavala to collect garbage from the expressway in a tempo with some other people. She was hit by a speeding car when she was crossing the road to collect some plastic from the other side.

“She suffered severe injuries on her head and other parts of her body. She was taken to a nearby hospital but she was declared brought dead on arrival,” said a police officer from New Panvel police station.

The vehicle that hit the woman did not stop after the accident. The police have registered a case under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Motor Vehicle Act.

“None of her companions can recollect the registration number of the car. We are now taking help of toll naka officials to trace the car,” the officer said.

The body has been sent to Rural Hospital in Panvel for a postmortem.
