Brace for a tough Thursday as autorickshaw unions have called for a one-day strike to protest against the Thane Municipal Corporation’s (TMC) action against illegal hawkers and parking.

Anant Sawant, coordinator for the unions, said the hawkers’ union will also join auto drivers in the protest.
After deputy municipal commissioner Sandeep Malvi was attacked on May 10, civic commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal intensified the drive against hawkers. The following day, Jaiswal allegedly thrashed drivers who had parked their vehicles on roads during peak hours.
Sawant said, “The drive is unauthorised. The Constitution says everyone has a right to earn their livelihood. We have decided to stop plying autos from Wednesday midnight. Autos will be off roads on Thursday. We will also march to the district collector’s office, seeking justice.”
