Eight state transport (ST) bus drivers were booked by Nizampura police after they refused to ply, following the death of a fellow worker who succumbed to a heart attack on Thursday.

Police said they asked the drivers to ply, but they refused. After a brief investigation, the police lodged a case against them under section 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code. However, the situation did not improve.

The official said the strike inconvenienced passengers.

“We have initiated a heavy bandobast. Investigations are ongoing,” said an officer of the Nizampura police. He added that they have not arrested anyone yet.

On Thursday morning, Prabhakar Gaikwad, a bus driver from Bhiwandi, fought with an autorickshaw driver. He collapsed and died while he was being treated at a local hospital. In protest, not a single bus left the Thane depot since 5.00 am on Friday.
