The Navi Mumbai crime branch arrested a 24-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh for allegedly carrying illegal firearms on Thursday in Nerul.
The arrested man, Chandesh Pandey, a resident of Maharajganj district, works as a market executive with a private company, the police said.
The police had received a tip-off that a suspicious looking man was coming to Nerul (east) with some firearms in a black bag. They immediately formed several teams and deployed personnel in plainclothes.
“Within a few minutes, our officials spotted a man with a black bag near the bus depot. They detained him and checked his bag. They found two pistols, three desi kattas, seven live cartridges and a mobile phone in the bag,” said Hemant Nagrale, police commissioner of Navi Mumbai.
“We are investigating from where he got the firearms and to whom he was supposed to deliver them. He has been booked under section 3 and 25 of the Indian Arms Act. He is now in police custody,” Nagrale said.

{{/usCountry}}“Almost all the seized firearms were manufactured in north Indian states such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. A majority of them were factory made pistols,” a crime branch official said.
