A 22-year-old woman, who consumed acid after she was allegedly raped by her two neighbours in Boisar, died in Palghar on Sunday after battling for life for seven months. The two accused were arrested and lodged in Thane Central Jail in February.

The woman, a native of UP, got married in 2015 and shifted to a chawl in Boisar after her and her husband’s families refused to accept their relationship. Her husband, a catering contractor, had gone out of town for 3 weeks in January. Their neighbours, Sandeep Yadav and Shivam Yadav, who had been eyeing the woman, took her to a secluded area one day on the pretext of talking to her about her husband, said K Hegaje, police inspector, who is investigating the case.

They took her to an abandoned building and raped her there while threatening to kill her with a pistol and a knife in their hands, said Hegaje, while adding that they left her on a road after the incident.

The officer added that they told the her not to report the case while saying that they had taped the incident and would upload the video if she went to the cops.

In February, the day her husband was to return, she consumed acid. Her husband rushed her to the hospital, where he found out that she had been raped. He filed a complaint with the Boisar MIDC police against the two accused.

“We had arrested the two for gang rape, kidnapping, blackmailing and they are lodged in the Thane Central Jail,” said the official.,

Dr Apeksha Mhatre, medical officer, RH Hospital, Palghar, said, “Her food pipe was badly damaged and we tried our best to save her, but couldn’t. She had lost weight and was undergoing mental trauma due to the incident.”
