28-year-old son of cop killed in hit-and-run on Eastern Express Highway

MUMBAI: In a hit-and-run, a 28-year-old son of a police officer was killed on the Eastern Express highway at Mulund (East) on Saturday evening.

The unidentified motorist fled from the spot without rendering help.

The Navghar police said the accident occurred around 6pm on the north-bound stretch at the start of Navghar bridge. Vinay Pawar was heading to Thane on a Honda Unicorn bike with his friend Samadhan Ghadge, who was riding pillion.

An unidentified vehicle hit them and fled from the spot. Pawar and Ghadge fell off the bike. While Pawar suffered grievous head injuries and bled from his mouth and nose leading to his death, Ghadge fortunately escaped with minor injuries.

Senior police inspector Madhav More of Navghar police said, “An advocate who was passing by stopped to help and rushed them to a nearby hospital where Pawar was declared dead, while Ghadge was treated for his injuries. Ghadge is unconscious but will soon be discharged.”

The policeman said there is no CCTV surveillance on the stretch of the highway near Navghar. An eyewitness gave the police clues on the make and colour of the vehicle that hit the biker. The police are searching the culprit.

The deceased’s father works as a sub- inspector with the Mumbai police and is posted in DB Marg. The family lives in the same area.

The unidentified motorist has been booked under sections 279, 338, 304 A of IPC and 134 A and 134 B of the Motor Vehicles Act for rash driving, causing grievous hurt, causing death by negligence and escaping from the spot without rendering help.
