THANE:A Thane Municipal Corporation (TMT) bus crushed a 13-year-old boy, who was riding a bicycle, at Kalwa naka in Thane on Tuesday night. The Class 8 student, Mangesh Rathod, was riding from Kalwa to Thane when the accident took place around 9pm, said the police. The 52-year-old bus driver, Bhausaheb Chavan, was later arrested.
According to eyewitnesses, the bus, which was supposed to stop at the Kalwa naka bus stop, did not brake on time and crashed into the bicycle that the student of Manisha Vidyalaya was riding.
One of the eyewitnesses — Pravin Bhalerao, 28, an autorickshaw driver from Kalwa — said, “I saw the boy on the bicycle. We shouted out at the bus driver, asking him to stop the vehicle. He applied the brakes only after the boy was hit.”
Mangesh’s father, Limbaji, 37, is a carpenter and the family lives in Saiba Nagar at Kalwa. The teenager has a 9-year-old brother. “I came home around 8pm and accompanied my uncle to a hospital near our home for a check-up. When I came back from hospital, he [Mangesh] even played with me. Later, he took out his bicycle around 8.45pm and a few minutes, I was told about the accident by those who saw it happen.”
Mangesh’s cousin, Raju Rathod, 22, who works at a private firm, said, “TMT drivers do not follow traffic rules. I have been hearing of such accidents for the past six months. I, too, have been injured in one such accident. We want justice.”

{{/usCountry}}A Kalwa hospital doctor, who attended to Mangesh after he was brought there, said the teenager was brought dead to the hospital. “He had sustained severe injuries to his head and back,” said the doctor.
The police said during preliminary investigations, it was found that the boy was riding a bicycle and taking a turn towards Kalwa side when the Thane-bound bus hit him. The bus was not speeding, said the police. A constable from the Kalwa police station said, “We have arrested the accused. We are waiting for the post-mortem report and completing other legal formalities.” At the time of going to press, a case was being registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act.
